Real Madrid defeated German side Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 on Tuesday to move into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with a 4-1 aggregate scoreline.
Zinedine Zidane’s men had won the first leg in Bergamo Italy by one goal to nil with Ferland Mendy scoring the only goal but on Tuesday evening at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium in Spain, the Los Blancos did all that was needed by winning emphatically.
Real Madrid took the lead in the 34th minute of the game through French striker Karim Benzema who now has four goals in his last three games for the Los Blancos.
The Spaniards doubled the lead in the second half in the 61st minute through captain Sergio Ramos who scored from the penalty spot.
There was almost a nervy end to the game as Atalanta put one back in the 82nd minute through Luis Muriel but any hopes of a comeback and a dramatic finish to the game was ended by Marco Asensio’s goal two minutes later.
Real Madrid joins Porto, Dortmund, PSG Manchester City, and Liverpool as teams that have qualified for the quarter-finals.
Real Madrid will play Celta Vigo in the Spanish La Liga in the coming weekend as they continue to chase La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid.
The Los Blancos are six points behind their city rivals Atletico Madrid but they sit in third after Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Huesca at the Camp Nou on Monday.
The quarterfinals spots will be completed on Wednesday as Chelsea and Atletico Madrid face each other in the second leg of the round of 16 fixtures. Chelsea has a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
Meanwhile, in the other game on Wednesday evening, Bayern Munich will host Italian side Lazio after a 4-1 lead from the first leg.
