Brazil-Argentina match abandoned after kick off as visiting players accused of Covid-19 violations

Brazil and Argentina’s World Cup qualifier was abandoned just minutes after kick-off on Sunday after Brazilian health officials objected to the participation of three Argentine players.

The four England-based players are believed to have broken quarantine rules.

The visitors walked off the pitch at the Corinthians Arena after the officials came out to stop the game.

The four players’ names were not revealed but it is obvious that they are Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa) as well as Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero (Tottenham Hotspur).

Three of the four English Premier League clubs’ players – Martinez, Lo Celso and Romero – had started the game.

It has not been announced when the rearranged fixture will be played but Argentina have traveled back home to prepare for their next World Cup qualifier – at home to Bolivia on Friday.

FIFA will now gather evidence from all sides before a decision on the most appropriate course of action is taken.
