FKF launches women’s football strategy to see Kenya at World Cup

Football Kenya Federation, Wednesday launched a women’s football development strategic plan, a master plan that seeks to prepare the country for the women’s World Cup in five years.

The launch was attended by football stakeholders and officials of the federation, who were briefed on the document by the FKF head of women’s football Doreen Nabwire.

The legendary footballer, Kenya’s first woman to play professional football abroad, said the plan will have an elaborate structure for leagues and competitions starting from the grassroots all the way to the national teams.

Kenyan women’s football has been on the rise in recent years, with the national team having qualified for the 2017 African Women Cup of Nations and making an impression in the Olympics qualifiers, first in 2015 and in 2019.

However, the FKF has in the past fortnight been on the receiving end for what Kenyans have termed as a serious joke after the women’s premier League champions Thika Queens were awarded KS350,000 for their exploits despite the federation having promised a prize purse of KSh8 million.

Queens are bidding to qualify for the inaugural CAF Champions League but have to navigate through the CECAFA region qualification round which kicks off in Nairobi this weekend and it remains to be seen what support the team will receive from the federation which receives at least KSh50 million annually from world governing body -FIFA – for women’s football development.
