The Spanish side, Getafe has expressed appreciation to the European football governing body UEFA for postponing their Europa League tie with Inter.

The postponement of the clash was due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic which has left over 50 people dead in Italy and over 3000 globally.

The World Health Organization (WHO) had said that they were officially upgrading the COVID-19 status to a global pandemic.

UEFA had said that the games would go on as planned, but the Spanish authorities had placed travel restriction on people coming to and from Italy, forcing the postponement.

Paris Sainte Germaine’s striker, Kylian Mbappe had gone for a coronavirus test as well with the result yet to be revealed.

Arsenal also cancelled their game against Olympiacos on medical grounds because they have to quarantine their players because of the contact with Olympiacos owner.

Getafe director-general Clemente Villaverde who confirmed the postponement of the game in an interview with reporters thanked UEFA for the support during the current emergency.

He also said that the club will accept the decision on when the game should be played as the decision is not known yet. The club is trusting the regulators that the conclusion arrived at will be the best option for all involved.

Speaking further, he said that it possible that the game will be a one-off affair on neutral turf, rather than over two legs.

It could be recalled that Getafe had refused to travel to Italy for the game. Milan, where the first leg supposed to be held, is one of the worst regions hit by the Coronavirus in the country.  Last weekend Debry D’Italia between Inter Milan and Juventus was played behind closed doors over the situation. It has also forced the cancellation of the games in the country till April.

UEFA has also taken the same decision over the match involving Sevilla and Roma.

The games had been in serious doubt due to the decision of the Spanish government to cancel all flights to and from Italy to contain the Coronavirus in Spain.
