Inter wins Serie A title after Sassuolo draw against Atalanta

Inter Milan has won the Italian Serie A for the first time in ten years after Sassuolo and  Atalanta played out a 1-1 draw at the Mapei Stadium on Sunday.

Inter only needed the host to stop Le Dea from winning, and that was the case to dethrone Juventus, who had won the last nine Scudetto as champion.

Atalanta that is second on the log played most of the game with ten men and still got a valuable point that will help their Champions League goal.

In the decisive match, the draw leaves Atalanta on 69 points, 13 points adrift the Nerazzurri, who had won their week 34 clash at Crotone on Saturday 2-0.

Atalanta was in total dominance until a moment of madness from Pierluigi Gollini. The goalie flew outside the area to barge over Jeremie Boga, who had surprised Hans Hateboer on the counter. He was eventually issued a straight red after a VAR confirmation.

The new goalkeeper Marco Sportiello saved Manuel Locatelli’s strike, and the visitors later took the lead through Robin Gosens. The German left-back got a dinked pass from Malinovskyi and let it bounce before acrobatically hitting the half-volley at the back post.

Atalanta continued their dominance after Domenico Berardi’s curled shot inched past the upright. Their goal was ruled offside when Berat Djimsiti’s effort was parried into the path of Duvan Zapata.

They would have doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Marlon was caught in possession, but Chiriches blocked Gosens’ shot after charging it down.

The host would restore parity after the restart via a soft penalty. Rafael Toloi nudged in the back of Junior Hamed Traore, and the referee pointed to the spot.  Domenico Berardi made no mistake by converting into the bottom corner to equalise.

Despite being a man down, Atalanta continued to attack but couldn’t get the needed three points that would have extended Inter Milan’s celebration party till next week.

As expected, the Nerazzurri have been receiving congratulatory messages from the Serie A clubs after the Atalanta game.
