Luis Suarez was at the double on Monday evening at the Wanda Metropolitano when Atletico Madrid was held to a 2-2 draw by visitors Celta Vigo.
Celta were winless in six games in all competitions before the visit to the Wanda Metropolitano. They lost four and drew two other matches.
Diego Simeone’s men haven’t dropped points in the La Liga since the 12th of December when they lost in the Madrid Derby. They have gone on an eight-game winning streak, building a seven-point lead at the top of the La Liga.
Santi Mina gave the visitors the lead early in the first half on the 13th minute but Luis Suarez equalized just before the break.
The former Barcelona striker gave Atletico the lead with his second goal five minutes after the break.
A win could have extended Atletico Madrid’s point gap at the top of the table to ten points but Facundo Ferreyra’s first Atlético Madrid goal in the final minute of the game snatched a point for the ‘out-of-form’ Celta.
It is Celta’s third consecutive draw in the La Liga after a 1-1 draw with Eibar and a goalless draw against Granada in their last game.
Despite the setback, the skipper of the Los Rojiblancos Kike spoke about the need for the team’s defense to be stronger in order to stay in contention for the La Liga title.
“If we want to fight for La Liga, we have to concede few goals, We have to learn from those mistakes so that the next game it doesn’t happen,” Koke said.
Atletico Madrid still leads La Liga with eight points ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid in second and third respectively.
Celta Vigo is in tenth with 26 points from 22 points although they have only picked three in their last five matches.
They will host Elche next in their next game on Friday while Atletico Madrid’s next game is at Granada on Saturday.
