Questions over inclusion of five Kariobangi Sharks players in Harambee Stars squad

Kenyans on Twitter and other social media platforms have expressed their displeasure at the Harambee Stars squad named on Friday by Coach Jacob Mulee for next month’s Qatar 2022 World Cup qualification matches.

Mulee announced a provisional 36-man squad, leaving out Simba defender Joash Onyango and curiously including two goalkeepers from Kariobangi Sharks, owned by Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa.

Further questions surround the exclusion of skipper Victor Wanyama of Montreal in Major League Soccer, who had a public spat with Mwendwa after the 2019 AFCON in Egypt over accountability of public funds given to the federation. Mwendwa was put to task over how the funds were spent, Wanyama coming out to say the federation had asked the players to inexplicably surrender KSh12 million to the federation out of KSh50m that had been promised to them by Deputy President William Ruto.

Kenyans have questioned how Sharks have five players included in the squad – goalkeepers Brian Bwire and Brandon Obiero as well as defender Daniel Sakari, midfielder Patillah Omotto and striker Erick Kapaito.

Irate Harambee Stars supporters are asking who really compiled the team – Mulee or Mwendwa.

Kenya, pooled with Rwanda, Mali and Uganda in Group E, will begin their quest to make it to Qatar 2022 against the Uganda Cranes on 2nd September at Nyayo Stadium, after which they will travel to face Rwanda away in Kigali.
