Zawadi Mauya scored the only goal of the match to help his Young Africans (Yanga) side edge past their archrivals Simba in a league match played Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium.
The match was attended by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
The win means Simba’s march to the Vodacom league crown is halted , with Yanga also with a mathematical chance of winning the league title.
Mauya scored in the 12th minute with a powerful shot from just outside the area, drilling the ball home from a rebound ball after Deus Kaseke’s corner.
This is the second time for Simba to lose to Yanga. On March 8 last year, they lost by a similar margin in the presence of then President John Pombe Magufuli, now deceased.
The victory means Yanga have 70 points from 32 matches and are still second in the league’s standings.
Simba are atop with 73 points from 30 matches.
