Sylvia Chelangat started slowly off the blocks but she recovered well to win a bronze medal in the women’s 400m final of the World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.
Chelangat finished third in a tight race, clocking a personal best time of 52.23 seconds behind Imaobong Nse Uko of Nigeria and Poland’s Kornelia Lesiewiscz who won gold and silver respectively.
Earlier, Vincent Keter had secured Kenya’s fifth gold medal of the championships in the men’s 1,500m but there was disappointment to his compatriot Kamar Etyang whose third place finish would not count as he was disqualified for lane infringement.
It was the second time Kenyans were being disqualified after the Mixed Relay team suffered the same fate on the opening day.
Keter blasted the final lap with a devastating final kick to chest the tape in a time of 3:37.24 ahead of Ethiopian Wegene Addisu who bagged silver.
