Olympics: Emmanuel Korir leads compatriot Rotich to one-two finish to hand Kenya first gold in Tokyo

Kenya has finally bagged her first gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo Japan, Emmanuel Korir beating compatriot Ferguson Rotich to win the 800m men’s race in a Kenyan one-two finish.

Korir takes over the country’s gold mantle in the race from world record-holder over the distance – David Rudisha, who dominated the race in 2012 in London and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

Korir clocked 1:45.06 with Rotich bagging silver in a time of 1:45.23 while Kenya’s nemesis Nigel Amos of Botswana finished a distant eighth after stopping his clock at 1:46.41.

Korir took up the challenge at the bell and showed he was fit to wear Rudisha’s crown as he struck gold in 1:45.06 with Rotich clocking 1:45.23 for the silver.
