Kenya’s national sevens rugby team is out of contention for the medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo following a poor run in the group stages.
Shujaa lost all their group matches to USA, South Africa and Ireland to earn relegation to the classification contest at the Games.
They opened their Olympics quest with a 19-14 loss to the US, followed by a 12-5 crash in the hands of South Africa before losing out to Ireland 12-7 in the final group match. Coach Namcos Simiyu’s charges needed victory to advance to the quarter finals as one of the best third-place finishers but failed to muster the win against the Irishmen.
The loss means Kenyans will turn their hopes on the women’s team if there is anything to come from the sevens rugby discipline at the Games.
